What is a HEIC file?

Understanding the format and why you might need to convert it.

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones and iPads running iOS 11 and later. It is Apple's implementation of the HEIF standard (High Efficiency Image Format), which uses HEVC (H.265) video compression technology to store still images. The result is photos that are roughly half the file size of JPEG with equal or better image quality.

The problem is compatibility. While Apple devices open HEIC photos natively, most Windows PCs, Android phones, and older software cannot. Websites and social platforms often struggle with HEIC uploads too. Converting to JPG or PNG makes your photos universally compatible — ready to email, post, print, or edit in any application.

Format Best for Compression
JPG / JPEG Sharing photos, email, social media Lossy — small file size
PNG Maximum quality, screenshots, images with text Lossless — larger file size
WEBP Websites and web apps Lossy — 25–35% smaller than JPG

Common questions

Everything you need to know about converting HEIC files.

Windows does not natively support the HEIC format without installing additional codecs from the Microsoft Store. While Windows 11 added limited support, many applications — including older versions of Photoshop, Word, and most photo viewers — still cannot open HEIC files. Converting to JPG is the quickest fix and ensures compatibility with everything.
Converting HEIC to JPG involves some quality reduction because JPG uses lossy compression. However, our converter uses a high quality setting (92%) which is visually indistinguishable from the original for photographs. If you need lossless output that preserves every pixel perfectly, choose PNG instead — though the file size will be larger.
Yes. Your photos are sent over an encrypted HTTPS connection, converted on our server, and deleted immediately after the converted file is delivered to you. We do not store, log, or share your photos. No account or sign-up is required — there is nothing to track back to you.
JPG uses lossy compression — some image data is discarded to achieve smaller file sizes. It is ideal for photographs shared online or by email. PNG uses lossless compression, preserving every pixel exactly — ideal when you need the highest quality, or the image contains text, sharp edges, or a transparent background. For typical iPhone photos, JPG is the best choice.
WEBP is a modern image format from Google that achieves better compression than both JPG and PNG — typically 25–35% smaller than an equivalent JPG at the same quality. All modern browsers support it, making it ideal for websites and web apps. However, some older desktop applications and photo editors may not support WEBP, so JPG or PNG is safer for general use.
The maximum file size is 50 MB per conversion. Most iPhone HEIC photos are between 3 and 8 MB, so this covers virtually all everyday use cases including photos taken in high-resolution ProRAW or portrait modes.
Yes. This converter supports both .heic and .heif files. HEIF is the open international standard, and HEIC is Apple's implementation of it. They use the same underlying format and are converted identically — just drag and drop either file type.
